Washington ( - Das staatliche Rettungspaket für den US-Finanzmarkt nimmt konkrete Konturen an. Aus Kreisen des Kongresses verlautete, eine Abstimmung im Repräsentantenhaus über das Gesetzespaket sei schon am Mittwoch oder Donnerstag möglich. Finanzminister Henry Paulson und Notenbankchef Ben Bernanke riefen den Kongress zu raschem Handeln auf. Die beiden Architekten des Rettungsplans mussten sich am (heutigen) Dienstag in einer Anhörung im Bankenausschuss des Senats stellen.

A day after firing China’s top quality regulator over the tainted milk scandal that has killed four infants, Beijing has vowed to prevent tainted milk products from reaching processors or export markets. Panic over the tainted milk, which made a total of 53000 ill, has spread to many Asian and African countries where not only baby formula but ice bars and yoghurt have been contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine. Melamine can cause kidney stones, organ failure and other agonising complications when consumed in excessive amounts by infants.

Une fusillade s’est produite, mardi 23 septembre, dans un lycée professionnel de la ville de Kauhajoki, dans l’ouest de la Finlande. Le premier ministre a confirmé le bilan de neuf tués, sans détailler le nombre de blessés. Toutes les victimes seraient des étudiants de l’école.

Le tireur, un élève de l’établissement, a tenté de se donner la mort, selon les autorités de cette petite ville de 14 000 habitants située à 360 km d’Helsinki. Selon l’édition en anglais du Helsingin Sanomat, le jeune homme, âgé de 22 ans, habillé en noir, masque de ski sur les yeux, portant un grand sac, a pénétré dans le lycée vers 11 heures du matin. Il aurait tiré plusieurs rafales sur des étudiants en train de passer un examen, avant de rester un long moment retranché dans l’établissement, tout en continuant de tirer. Le maire de Kauhajoki a indiqué que le tireur était blessé à la tête et hospitalisé.

Breaking Bad won a second Emmy last night and it was a major one at that. Bryan Cranston walked away with the statuette for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series beating out James Spader (Boston Legal), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Hugh Laurie (House), Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment) and Jon Hamm (Mad Men).

Said Bryan Cranston upon picking up his equally bald statuette, “I guess the restraining order has been lifted,” in reference to his first Emmy win after two past nominations.

At last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys Breaking Bad took home its first Emmy when Lynne Willingham won for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series. In total, AMC won eight Emmys with Mad Men winning for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Hairstyling, Cinematography, and Title Design

It’s official. Mad Men is the best drama on television. The show won an Emmy saying as much, in the process beating out contenders Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, House and Lost. Creator Matthew Weiner got his own statuette as well for Best Writing, Drama Series for the pilot “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” (The Best Actor, Drama award went to Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad.) Four other Emmys were awarded to Mad Men as part of the Creative Arts Prime Time Emmys last weekend, giving the series a grand total of six Emmys. The other awards were as follows…
